Have I been right to be out of the market?
I've been out of the market in my retirement for some time now, a year maybe, and my balance has not gone down. The available investments (which are quite limited, probably by design) have been hit an average of 10% I think.
So, have I been right to remain out of the market? I think so.
Word of advice, if you are going to invest in this kind of market, keep a tube of Preparation-H in your desk drawer. Mine is in there and it has yet to be used.

I think you are doing the right thing. The stock funds in my 401K all suck. People talk about "dollar averaging" but I don't know that it works well when the market is tanking. My 401K doesn't offer any commodity funds, so I'm parked in Money Markets. I'm not making much,but it's forward progress. When the dow hits 3000, I'll probably start buying stocks again.
